Bull and Butcher, Turville, 13 September 2006

With the light disappearing quickly in the evenings, it was decided to meet at 6.45pm instead of the usual 7pm. A route was planned with open ground in mind. Another good turnout, 15 in total, not going to list you all, you know if you were there!

Good run, quite short compared to normal standards but a welcome change. In consequence we didn’t get the usual complaints, just cries of delight when we realised how close we were to the pub and we were not being lead off on one last loop! Despite the shortness of the run, Jules was obviously keen to test our off road skills and lead us through an interesting wood, where the terrain under foot was less than ideal and stinging nettles particularly vicious! That’s the last time anyone questions your map reading abilities, Jules! Promise!

Once the wood was negotiated the rest of the run was fairly uneventful and we all arrived safely back at the pub. Conversation around the table was varied. With Gullane about to start certain elements were getting quite excited, so much so that Chris was not even drinking. Jerome was the hero of the day, having had, a rather good game of golf, but he could have now peaked. There was a certain amount of debate about who was doing the Rowers Revenge this year, an investigation into who had actually put in an entry form and who had not, even though they said they were going to! You know who you are!!

With numbers decreasing and more alcohol being consumed the conversation took its normal nose dive, not helped by me! All I can say is that when not given a full explanation of why an individual has a nickname, one is forced to make ones own conclusions! My apologies to ‘Klit’. On further discussion I can reveal that I was not alone in misunderstanding, others had thought it was to do with his sexual preferences.

Next week is our final week and as with usual tradition it will conclude with a curry but this year from the Mowchak, Stokenchurch. We hope to have a 6.30pm start due to light conditions. I believe Susie might be sending out an email about the curry asking for numbers?

Have a good weekend, see you all on Wednesday! Could someone maybe contact Brett and Richard?

I hope there are not too many grammatical errors, David?

Hare & Hounds, Marlow - 30 August 06

Not a bad turnout for Fred & Jerome's suggested venue of the newly revamped Hare & Hounds which has seen a few transformations since my early years in Marlow drinking with the Marlow Mafia, one of whom it turned out is now running the place.
Amanda, Kate, Fred, David, Doug, Duds, Jerome, Jules, Steve (Spider), Steve T and myself assembled ready for the off. Dougy made a welcome return to the throng looking well stocked up on calories from , we were told, a diet of Guiness, cider and Irish potatoes. We duly set off up the Happy Valley route out towards Marlow Common. As we headed through the woods towards Danesfield the sensible group kept to the higher ground while some of our more enthusiastic members for some reason contrived to run up and down a few more contours. David & Dougy seemed to be a little concerned as to how far we were running away from the pub while Fred was giving instructions to turn right to do an extra loop when she really meant left. Luckily the leading group hadn't heard her anyway. After skirting the ex-RAF housing estate at Danesfield and dropping down steeply through the woods, we turned sharply back on ourselves, heading off towards Bockmer End. At his point David & Doug decided to graciously accept Jerome's instructions as to an alternative shorter route home while the rest of the group ploughed on to do that little bit extra. All in all quite a pleasant little circuit past Bockmer End Farm, eventually to return along the same footpath that we started on down Happy Valley.
The girls seemed to be very impressed with the trendy new interiors of the Hare & Hounds and were soon busy arranging when they were all going to meet up there for a girlie get together. The boys were more intent on the practicalities of arranging the excessively high tables and chairs together and wondering whether the beer was going to be OK. Turned out the beer was OK, except that is for Jerome's lager, which was a bit on the warm side. Unfortunately Duds must have had a sudden giddy turn on his high perch and managed to knock Spider's pint over whilst reaching for the Cheese & Onion. John the landlord duly appeared to politely mop up his brand new tables and was probably quietly regretting that he hadn't gone for the spit & sawdust look instead. Luckily he failed to recognise me amongst the mob, so I kept a low profile.
Amanda thought that the place might be good for our end of season run, though I'm not sure whether that's a definite or not. Fred mentioned that she wanted to book The Frog again for our Christmas bash.
Next week we're going to try a new venue - The Flowerpot at Aston.
It's on the other side of the river, so to get there, take the A404 and then the A423 towards Henley. After the turning to Hurley on the right hand side, about 3 miles further on, turn right where signposted for Aston. The pub is about a mile down this road. If you want to, you can park on the north side of the river at Mill End, then cycle (or run) across the weir & lock to the pub. It's difficult to park at Mill End - there's a public car park half amile along the road to Hambleden on the left hand side.
I've volunteered to plot a route, which Jules says must include some hills, so see you there.
By the way, because of the failing daylight, we will start the run at 6.45 pm.

The Black Lion, Naphill, 23rd August

Sadly having checked out the blog I realised that this is my first run since July 5th. Not to be deterred I decided to go and hope that Selwyn and David might be there to keep me company. Fortunately Selwyn was but having been cycling for most of the last month his fitness has now reached the level of someone 20 years younger i.e. 45 is that right??
Not only that two people I had never met before were there, namely Dominique and a friend of Jules who I was not introduced to. Unfortunately both are far fitter than me and therefore I didn’t get to know them at all.
Anyway, Jules, Amanda, Spider, Duds, Fred, Steve, Kate and the aforesaid set off from the Black Lion. Within a few minutes it was chucking it and as Jules had led us into a huge open field there was nothing left to do but absorb it. A wet T-shirt competition was started but as no one looked sexier it was abandoned as a draw.
This was actually a very nice new route and congratulations to Jules on that. For once he has excelled himself although his refusal to take the long route around a field rather than the clear footpath through the middle was mystifying. Considering the rain, from the back of the field the run seemed quite uneventful although personally I got a little cheesed off when Selwyn flicked a wet branch back into my face walking up that extremely steep incline towards the end. It was getting a little dark in the woods at the end and that is a clear sign that there are not many runs left so make the most of it.
Pub conversation highlights will have to be added by another as I was wrapped up talking with Selwyn about town planning – yes sad isn’t it?
Happy Birthday to Kate and thanks for the first round last night. Also congratulations on the ½ marathon as well.
Next week we have decided to run Happy Valley starting from the Hare and Hounds in Marlow. Fred or I will check to see if it is open yet though. 7pm start should still be ok.
I think that a new part of the Blog should be publication of "what’s left in the kitty". This might encourage me to run more frequently.
Anyway take care all, must go as my son has distracted me by putting on Terminator 1.

The Ship, Cadmore End - 16th August 2006

On the basis that the assigned run reporter namely Michael did not look that enthusiastic about doing the report on leaving the pub last night, I've decided to take the initiative even though I'm up to my eyeballs in it at the moment - 11+ revision, geography projects, new school shoes and off on holiday next Wednesday. Its ok you lot - just carry on sitting at your desks having fun.

Following Amanda's sharp reminder that any further fall in numbers would incur her wrath, eight obediently turned up and made a variety of pathetic excuses for the previous week - jules, me, duds, dominique, jules, kate, Steve S and Michael - yes amanda was there as well.

Jules trudged in from Radnage just 3 miles away and told us the great news that we were going to do a mini roller coaster. An hour later once Jules had herded three sheep to their death along the way, taken us up three very sharp climbs including the windmill and still had time to take a group photo with the late summer mist rising in the far hills, we completed a very pleasant run.

By the WindMill (almost home!!)

Once inside the pub we decided that it was even more of a dead cert for eviction from the pub circuit than Nikki from BB - no I don't watch it. No Stella or Kronenbourg, Wasteiner was off, no pork scratchings, crappy crisps, no plain salted nuts and some fat bloke sitting at the bar who apparently was Jules and Amanda's butcher had the most appalling BO. Does Digby still have anything to do with this pub??

Good banter once the first drink started hitting the sides - J & A told us about Slovakia (its ok Duds explained to me in a rather condescending tone where that was and how it came about), Dominique livened up the party by making a bottle of water last through 3 rounds and then had the cheek to complain about Steve's scaly hard heels and show her distaste for group sex - quite right too I say. It was also one of those evenings when Duds in his amazingly subtle way introduced the subject of serial killers - yes we all know them and we all have our favourites - Peter Sutcliffe (apparently the police interviewed him 4 times before he was caught - yes coppers are thick generally), Harold Shipman and many others all of whom Duds had read about.

Next week we're off to........................................wait for it ...............................The Black Lion in Naphill - for those who are clueless about whereabouts - ask someone. I won't be there, off to France to recover from my Sunday half marathon.

Jusque plus tard

The Chequers, Fingest, 2nd August 2006

An interesting in evening in more ways than one. I think this is probably the first time that the group have turned up at a pub and found it closed!, and they didn’t even know we were coming!

Yet again a small group set out, had it not been for the welcome additions of both John, Duds and Michael the initial group would have been even smaller. We were later joined by Chris, Susie and a friend of Susie’s called Jules.

This was the 2nd Wednesday in a row that we had ventured forth with no map! But as ever Selwyn came to our aid and John’s memory is surprisingly, still as good as ever! Once in Ibstone we lost David from the group on a short cut, memories of Le De Spencer Arms were revisited but he fortunately managed to make it back, arriving just before the main pack.

Once all safely back at the building site that used to be the car park for the pub, a discussion ensued as to where we were going to drink, where upon a short detour to the Bull & Butcher, Turville was made. The pub fortunately was not busy and we managed to find a table inside, fortunate as it had now started raining! Pub talk was varied and I will admit I did not stay to the end. Duds told us that he was now 17 stone and show us his tummy to prove this. A discussion started about Jenny’s circuit class in Marlow, and how having attended one class a while ago he had been unable to move his arms and had had a sleepless night as a consequence! David described how he got stroppy with a fellow golfer on Presidents Day, for using his mobile phone whilst on the course, rules are rules and seemingly this guy helped set them! No spoof was done for the run report and as this is my last day before I go camping and with very little to do I volunteered to do it.

Next week at George and Dragon, West Wycombe for drinks. We normally start this run at the car park at the Golden Bull, at 7pm.

Have fun, see you all the following week.

Run Report - 26th July, The Jolly Farmer, Cookham Dean

WARNING - Never accept the challenge of a game of Spoof with David Abbott, if you do then you will lose and you will have to do the run report.

On a particularly humid evening Selwyn, Spider, Kate, Chris, Susie, David and I met up just across the road from the Jolly Farmer. We set off to face the considerable challenge of having no map, no GPS and possibly having to rely on David's sense of direction (see 12th July report).

However, after a few tentative minutes we were well on our way having found the correct route - basically running steadily upwards through some grassy fields, into the woods and down on to one of the tracks that runs sort of parallel to the A404. At this point Chris and I opted for an extra loop whilst the elite runners headed off through Quarry Wood and home.

Running conditions were good to firm underfoot and very hot. Rain, which would have been most welcome, looked likely but never appeared.

Elite Runners finished in around 48 minutes, stragglers came in around 57 minutes.

The pub (which is apparently owned by the locals) was perfectly pleasant, but the service was a bit slow. I can't comment on Spider's bar presence but after waiting around 10 minutes to get served, the barmaid actually decided to take a personal phone call half way through his order.

We were delighted to welcome Brett and Sarah who joined us for a few drinks. Immaculately turned out as they were, it showed us up as being a rather sweaty, lycra-clad bunch. All in all, whilst being a smallish crowd due to various holidays, we had a very pleasant evening in the beer garden.

In this spirit of friendship and openness Kate candidly admitted that she had been caught in a state of undress on her sons web-cam (there is a perfectly innocent explanation that I won't relate). Meanwhile, Chris, seemed intent on gathering a list of the best gastro-pubs in the region and David, being the louche bon viveur he is, knew just about all of them.

No pork scratchings!

Next weeks run is from the Chequers in Fingest, run starts at 7pm.

Run Report Wed 19th July 2006 - Prince Albert, Frieth

Here is last weeks run report from Kate.

6 in total! Me, spider, chris & Susie, Amanda & jules! Yes, I know it
was hot but it wasn't that bad, and it was very local for some of you so
location was not an issue! Admittedly Chris and Jules did start to run
from Radnage but flagged Susie down to pick them up half way. This was
actually quite a good move for the other runners at it meant we were
able to keep up with them on the main run.
The route was not the normal one from the Prince Albert, taking us down
over the hills to Skirmitt, around into Fingest and then up the hill to
Frieth. Not too long and fairly shady in parts. Various grumbles on
route but as normal mainly from the male section! Chris did the gallant
thing and made sure Amanda and Susie didn't get lost in the woods. With
the woods negotiated they went straight to the pub and ordered the
first G&T of the evening.
Having such small numbers we managed to all sit at one table which was
nice albeit a little cosy. A good time had by all, just a slight regret
that we did not have the kitty so we could have had more of a good time.
This week is the Jolly Farmer in Cookham Dean, 7pm. We are minus Amanda
and Jules this week as they are on holiday, making a grand total of 4 if
last weeks' attendance figures is anything to go by! So please come,
there is some kitty to spend and a small run just might keep you fit.
See on Wednesday.

Kate.

Run Report - Wednesday 5th July - Radnage

Here is Johns excellent run report from last night that he has asked me to place on the blog. Steve.

My memory only lasts for about 24 hours so I'm having to do this report Thursday morning to ensure no details of the evening's activities are spared. Met at Amanda and Jules as they had kindly volunteered their house as a viewing venue for the WC semi- finals although we realised it was not going to be quite the event we were expecting. More on that later.
I was first there and found a sensible parking space close to the hedge on the far side. As it turned out this gave me a wonderful view of Steve S (who appeared next) trying to find a suitable parking space for his car. Do you ever have those moments when presented with acres of parking spaces you simply cannot decide where to park which has the effect of usually causing some family row about decision making? Well this was it but fortunately Steve had no family in the car to argue with thereby avoiding what would have been a major ruckus.
At roughly 7 we set off through the Huck's back garden without the need for a United Nations conference on the route to be taken. The party included Jerome, Steve S (without car), Steve T, Amanda, Jules, Rodders, Susie, Michael, Selwyn and Kate although there were a couple of notable absentees namely Doug who has decided his body will only allow him to run once every two weeks and Carters who felt his neighbours 60th birthday party was more important. Can you imagine a 60th birthday party and being on the wagon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Conditions were excellent - recent storms had cooled the air and softened the ground for Rodders's knees so he set the pace from the start with Jules in hot pursuit. With the crops well into the growing season most of the party were nearly lost in an early cornfield but the scent of Kate's perfume kept people on track. Duds almost started reminiscing again at one point near Studley Green about some earlier life he had had. Jerome complained that he hadn't run for 3 weeks but was consoled by the fact that the evening only cost him 4 cans of Strongbow. It was a very pleasant run with lots of woody bits and Jules I'm sure will furnish you with the details later.
Showered (I had Jules's shower setting just in case anyone was interested - no.1, think Amanda's was no.2) and refreshed we assembled for the footie and watched the Portuguese shame their country once again with their diving and cheating on the 42 incher. England started to get a fair pounding for their inability to make the semi's but discussion was cut short by the head of the England fan club Rodders who thought England and David Beckham were wonderful and we shouldn't be giving them such a hard time. We consoled ourselves with lashings of pizza, garlic bread, bhaji's, nibbles, beer, wine and Jerome keeping Ollie and Sam amused. We should not forget to mention the sterling work being done in the kitchen by Barbara - apologies if that's not her name. Its certainly not what I called her when she appeared in my dream last night! As we all know France won through with another Henry dive and Scholari was left to berate the referee as Portugal's last pathetic effort to get into the final - and we lost to them????????? Well played England - better luck next time and all that bull....!
I left the Roddicks and the Hucks' to enjoy the rest of their evening together although Jerome was there as well - couldn't quite work that one out.
Huge thanks to Amanda and Jules and family for the use of their lovely home and next week we're off to the Spencer Arms, Downley at 7. See you then unless you're coming to Heather's on Sunday.

John.

Amanda & Jules Place, Radnage. 17 May 06.

This was the usual run from Villa Amanda & Jules that we last ran a couple of years ago. Maybe it was the weather, but starters were a little thin on the ground, though perhaps not surprisingly attendance post-running was boosted by Jerome (problems with his Broadband) and Chris & Sue (feeling a tad unwell).
Runners were (as I remember, forgive me if I've missed someone out): Amanda, Fred, Kate, David, Duds, Jules, Steve T and myself. Julian started late and did a little circuit of his own - even so he managed to pass me on that last bit of steep climb before the finish. He was running - I wasn't.
It was wet and it got wetter is a fair summary of the conditions. A bit slippery underfoot but not too boggy. Kate managed not to fall over. From the hi-tech kit available to me (i.e. thumb's length on the OS + counting the contours), I reckon we did about 5 miles (the extra-loopers a bit more), dropping rapidly about 50 metres at the start, climbing steadily for the first half of the run approx. 100 metres and vice-versa on the return. Amanda, Duds, David and myself opted for the (only slightly) shorter route back. At least we avoided the fully grown rape field which apparently the others encountered, making them even wetter.
A start at 6.45pm ensured a return of approx. 7.45, K.O. for the Champions League Final. This we were able to observe in great style on Amanda & Jules' new giant plasma screen with surround sound audio. With a few cans in tow, good company, nibbles and hot dogs (sausages from the reknowned local butcher) kindly served up by Amanda, what could be better?
Our thanks again to Amanda & Jules as our hosts.
Don't think we sorted the venue for this Wednesday's run, so as the poster of this report, can I suggest Stag & Huntsman @ Hambleden 6.45 for 7.00 pm start?

Route details for The Chequers, Wheeler End 10/05/06

Here is the map and some data about the route.

Click on the map to enlarge.

Tour time: 1:08:00 ish

Distance: 5.5 miles

Climb: 702 feet

The Chequers, Wheeler End - 10th May 2006 (run number 7)

12 hardy souls set off at 7:05 for the (now) traditional Chequers tour via Towerage and the track above Adams Park. As we entered Denham Wood there were gasps of amazement as a fabulous display of Bluebells stretched for hundreds of meters ahead of us and the sweet smell was enhanced by the moist conditions. It was reminiscent of the Christmas Calendar photo for the Chilterns in Springtime!

Conditions underfoot were a little slippery as the rain had wet the surface but not soaked in to the very dry ground below. A fairly long and winding track then led us to an uphill track with a fantastic view of the Golden Ball to the right. We then regrouped at Towerage (top of the hill behind West Wycombe House) before heading towards Adams Park down Towerage Lane – a little known footpath often used as a back route to the Ground on match days.

A short distance on we were faced with a very new fence with no obvious crossing point – so we all scrambled over the fence and through a large patch of fresh stingers! The next section involved a climb through some very pleasant woodland on a twisty track eventually leading across the track to Grove Farm and the Horse riding centre used by Fred and Jerome’s kids. Horses then featured strongly as, after the long track to Fryers farm with Duds leading the way – spurred on by discussions about squid (don’t ask!) we headed steeply downhill through a field of particularly frisky Horses that threatened to trample us and kick out. This only slightly spoiled the fabulously picturesque view to the right that looked just like a moody Scottish forest with mist in the valley shrouding the tall pine trees in a moist haze. I was very thankful of Susie who spotted (while I was admiring the view) that one young horse had put its ears right back and was reversing in our direction! Fortunately we all survived unscathed and, apart from the occasional shout of “I thought you said this run was flat”, we all made it back to the pub within 70 minutes. Not bad for the 5.5 miles and not inconsiderable 700 ft of climb.

The pub was very welcoming and whilst Chris R reminisced about Presso at his wedding we got regular updates from the UEFA cup final which Middlesbrough eventually lost 4 -0. Apparently Presso had mounted Susie’s horse bareback during the evening celebrations and comprehensibly trashed his DJ. Horses are VERY greasy - be warned!

Next week’s run (actually this week as I am so late in publishing) is from Jules and Amanda’s house so that those that wish to can enjoy the Champions League final on the big screen. Start 6:45 as the game starts at 7:45. Please bring your own or give us your order by Wednesday morning. Nibbles to be supplied. Swimming is optional!

See you there….

Run Report - 26th April, Fox and Hounds

On a pleasant, humid evening 14 of us gathered in the car park of the Fox and Hounds (Selwyn, Michael, Jules, Amanda, Chris, Sharon, Susie, Jerome, Duds, Spider, Richard, Kate, David and myself).

Having virtually filled up the modest car park, members of the team asked some people who looked like members of staff whether we were all OK to park there. Unfortunately the bemused people in question were merely other customers trying to leave the car park after being blocked in by Jerome.

The run started at a pleasant pace with most of the first mile or so being a steady downhill. An early technical infringement was committed by Chris who pushed Amanda in the back on a rutted downhill section. He later claimed her fearful cries were expressions of joy and delight. Hmmm.

After a flattish middle section we encountered the large hill about a mile from home that takes you back up to the common. This hill is a real tester and I can report there was a ferocious attack on the hill by the four ladies, who on reaching the top outnumbered the gents there for a while.

Chris must have lost a cufflink or something at the bottom of the hill because he then proceeded to run back down the hill and then back up again. Takes all sorts, I suppose.

However, all made it home safely and so to the bar after a run of around an hour.

After a drink or two in the bar, discussions turned to the venue for next week. Selwyn (at least I think it was him) suggested a departure from convention in the form of a full-on urban trek through the streets of Wycombe. The suggested pub was the White Horse (the lap dancing venue and officially one of the 5 "hardest" pubs in England. I have to report there was a clear gender-based division of opinion on this suggestion.

It was finally agreed that the run for next week would be from Hughenden Church, followed by The Harrow. Run leaves at 7pm.

Cheers. Steve.
